Pokémon Card Pre-Grading Checklist
Pre-grading means inspecting a card before you pay for professional grading. It helps you record visible condition and decide what deserves a closer look. It cannot guarantee the result of a physical grading inspection.
Start with the reason for grading
Decide whether you want protection for a favorite card, authentication, or a card to sell. A personal favorite does not need to be a top-grade candidate to deserve a place in your collection. If resale is your goal, consider grading fees, shipping and the possibility of a lower-than-expected result. CardNomi’s card library can show dated market references for a matched raw-card printing. These are not guaranteed sale prices or graded-card valuations.
Inspect four areas separately
Check centering on the front and back. Examine every corner for rounding or whitening. Follow each edge for nicks and chips. Finally, inspect both surfaces under changing light for scratches, dents, stains or creases. Recording where you see each issue is more useful than starting with a desired grade.
Use the intended grader’s standards
PSA, TAG, BGS and CGC publish different grading guidance and scale distinctions. A number from one system is not automatically equivalent to the same number in another. Read the current standards from the grader you plan to use. CardNomi modes provide independent interpretations of public guidance, not access to those companies’ grading systems.
Leave uncertain details uncertain
A straight-on photo can hide a dent or a scratch on foil. Sleeves, glare and blur can obscure wear. If a detail is unclear, capture a better image or inspect the physical card instead of assuming it is flawless. A useful report should identify those limits.
Keep a record before submitting
Save front and back photos, your observations and the selected grading mode. When a card returns from professional grading, compare the result with your earlier assessment. This is a way to learn where your own inspection tends to miss details.
Read the grading companies’ own guidance
For submission decisions, review current standards directly: PSA grading standards, TAG’s rubric, Beckett grading, and CGC’s scale.
